Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of student benefits most from school in Britain?

One who is:

  • adventurous, curious, independent
  • serious academically
  • eager to try new things, to take advantage of a wide range of opportunities for extracurricular activities and travel
  • eager to pursue interests in music, drama or art to a level unavailable in his or her American school

And, for a 13th year, perhaps also one who is:

  • not ready for college academically— perhaps one who is just coming into his own in his or her studies and needs one more strong year so he can benefit more fully from the challenges of college
  • not ready for college personally— perhaps one who has skipped a grade and so is young for his or her class, or one who is young in temperament
  • interested eventually in applying to a British university
  • not happy with his American university prospects or acceptances and who desires to improve his credentials
  • looking for an unpaid internship before entering college

What are the criteria for acceptance?

There are appropriate schools for students with wide varieties of abilities and talents. Don't hesitate to talk to us about special situations.

What does the BAEF provide?

The BAEF provides:

  • Screening to make certain the experience will be a successful one, both academically and personally
  • Suggestions of appropriate schools and placement in a school chosen in close consultation with the student and his family

Is financial aid available?

Unfortunately, the BAEF cannot provide aid at this time, and British schools have limited aid.

What is the application deadline?

The earlier the better. Most decisions are made in the late fall, but there may be places to apply for in early spring. Some admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, within a month after students and their families firmly commit themselves to the program. Post-graduate scholars program applications are normally submitted in the fall. Gap Fellows must apply a year in advance.
