Before Graduating from High School You may choose to participate at any time after you have completed 9th grade. You can stay for one or two terms, or for the full three-term year, and then return to your school in the U.S. Remember that terms begin in September, January, and April. The April term runs to the end of June, after which you may wish to consider taking part in a summer program in England or in Europe, before returning to the States. The BAEF will work with your advisors at your present school to make sure your classes in England will satisfy the academic requirements of your American school.
Or you can leave your U.S. school and finish high school in England, using your A-Level results as the basis for applications to American or British universities.
Between School and College A 13th year program is of particular value to students who are younger than average upon graduation from high school or who are completing their high school requirements in three years. It can also provide an important year of educational achievement for students who are reaching their full academic potential late in their high school careers and who seek an additional year to confirm their abilities before entering college.
Because of the nature of the experience the BAEF offers, however, all secondary school graduates seeking a year of personal growth and discovery can benefit. The year of supervised independence in a challenging environment can help prepare students for the social as well as the academic choices they will face in college.
The BAEF accepts applications from students attending American and Canadian high schools and from Americans currently studying abroad. We regret that we are unable to assist other overseas applicants.
